The networks behind Dutch home internet, and how they differ from providers
Fibre, cable, 5G and satellite infrastructure explained for people choosing a connection
The company that brings the connection into your building is often not the one that bills you. Browse the networks to see what each one runs, what to know about coverage and installation, and how it relates to the providers selling plans over it. It is the place for infrastructure questions; subscriptions are chosen elsewhere.
What the network decides, and what your provider decides
Your internet comes from two companies at once. The network owner built the cable in the street and the connection point in your home, while the provider sells the subscription on top of it. On open fibre networks such as KPN, Open Dutch Fiber or Glaspoort, you can usually choose between several providers on the very same fibre.
The network decides
The physical side of your connection, which you cannot change by switching provider.
Which connection type reaches your home
The maximum speed the line can carry
Whether the dwelling has a finished connection point
Building work in the street and up to your door
Your provider decides
Everything about the subscription, which is why the same fibre can come with very different deals.
The monthly price and any introductory offer
Contract length and notice period
The router, Wi-Fi and installation service
Customer support and the bill you receive
Choice per network
Which networks give you the most choice of provider?
The more providers sell over a network, the more you can compare on price, contract and service without changing the connection in your home. These networks carry plans from the most providers in our catalogue.
Counts reflect the providers and plans in our catalogue, not every company that may sell over a network.

What is the difference between an internet network and a provider?
The network owns the physical cable and the connection point in your home. The provider sells you the subscription, supplies the router and sends the bill. They are often different companies, and on open networks several providers compete over the same line.
Can I choose my provider if my home is on a certain network?
On open fibre networks you usually can: several providers sell plans over the same fibre. On some networks only one or a few providers are active. The postcode check of each provider shows whether it can deliver to your exact address.
What is an open fibre network?
An open network lets multiple internet providers rent access to the same fibre. You keep the same connection point in your home but can switch to another provider without building work, which helps competition on price and service.
The fibre box on my wall says KPN. Do I have to use KPN?
No. The name on the box shows who owns the network, not who must sell you internet. Other providers that sell over that network can activate the same connection. Check your address with the providers you are considering.
Is cable internet the same as fibre?
No. Cable uses coax into the home, even though fibre is used further back in the network. Cable download speeds can be high, but upload is much lower than on fibre to the home, which matters for video calls and backups.
What if no fixed internet connection reaches my home?
A 5G router on a mobile network or a satellite dish can provide internet without a cable. Test the signal or the view of the sky at your address first, check data limits, and ask your landlord before mounting any equipment outside.
Ready to look at actual subscriptions?
Once you know which networks serve your area, search plans by speed and contract or compare a few side by side. Whether a network reaches your address is still settled by the provider's postcode and house-number check.
