Insurance in the Netherlands

Understand Insurance in the Netherlands Before You Compare Providers

Dutch insurance spans compulsory healthcare, everyday protection for belongings and liability, vehicle and travel risks, and longer-term cover for income, life or funeral costs. This resource organizes represented providers and products by what they insure, while explaining why exclusions, excess, limits, eligibility and contract structure matter. Build context here, open a provider profile, and confirm current terms in official policy documents before deciding.

Renting in the Netherlands

The four policies that come up when you rent

Not every insurance matters on day one of a Dutch tenancy. These four are the ones landlords, municipalities and housemates ask about most. Each card explains the role of the cover in plain language and links to the represented products, so you can compare real policies instead of guessing.

01

Personal liability (aansprakelijkheidsverzekering)

Covers damage you accidentally cause to other people or their property, including damage to a rented home. It is not required by law, but many Dutch leases ask tenants to hold it, and it is the cheapest cover most households carry.

41 products from 30 providersCompare Personal liability products
02

Contents insurance (inboedelverzekering)

Covers the things you own inside the home after fire, burglary, water damage or storm. Your landlord's buildings policy stops at the walls, so furniture, laptops and bikes stored indoors are your own responsibility.

91 products from 42 providersCompare Contents products
03

Legal expenses (rechtsbijstandverzekering)

Pays for legal help in disputes with a landlord, employer, seller or neighbour. Deposit refunds, rent increases and service charge arguments are common reasons tenants use it, subject to the waiting period.

161 products from 29 providersCompare Legal expenses products
04

Basic health insurance (basisverzekering)

Mandatory for everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands, usually within four months of registering. The government sets the covered care; insurers compete on premium, excess and contracted providers.

How to read a policy

Six things every product record documents

Luntero records the same facts for every insurance product, straight from the policy wording, the insurance card (IPID) and the provider's own pages. Reading them in this order turns a marketing page into a comparison you can actually make.

  1. 01

    Coverage points

Each policy lists what is included, what is optional, what applies only under conditions and what is excluded, with the limits and waiting periods attached to each point.

  2. 02

    Exclusions

The situations a policy will not pay for, such as damage to phones under an all-risk option or business items in a contents policy. Read these before the headline benefits.

  3. 03

    Premium basis

Whether the price is a fixed monthly amount, an advertised starting price or a personal quote that depends on your address, age and chosen options.

  4. 04

    Excess and limits

The amount you pay yourself per claim (eigen risico) and the maximum the insurer pays per item, per claim or per year.

  5. 05

    Eligibility

Age limits, residency requirements, household types, whether students and shared households are accepted and which documents the application asks for.

  6. 06

    Contract and cancellation

Minimum term, renewal model, cooling-off period, notice period and the rules that decide when cover actually starts.
