Moving and water

Arrange the water before, during and after your key handover

Keep the two addresses, their dates and their meter readings clear

A move can involve a new water registration and a separate cancellation at your old home. Record the appropriate readings when keys change hands, keep photos or the handover report and check who is responsible under the tenancy. Use this checklist to organise the common steps, then follow your supplier's own timing and instructions.

Moving checklist

Your water move in three phases

Arranging water for a move is a handful of small tasks spread around one moment: the key handover. Before it, you find out who holds the account and which company supplies the new home. On key day you record the evidence that protects you from paying for someone else's water. Afterwards you register the new address, close the old one and check that both final settlements use your dates and readings.

  1. Before the keys

    Prepare both addresses

    • Check the tenancy for water

Find out whether water is in the rent, the service charges or your own responsibility, and who holds the account today.

    • Confirm the supplier of the new home

Use the supplier's address check. Moving between regions often means a different company for the new address.

    • Write down both key dates

The day you receive the new keys and the day you return the old ones. These dates, not your furniture, mark your responsibility.

  2. On key day

    Record the evidence

    • Read the meter at the new home

Note the full reading in cubic metres and the meter number. Do the same at the old home when you hand back those keys.

    • Photograph the display

A dated photo showing both the reading and the meter number settles almost every later disagreement.

    • Get it in the handover report

Ask for the readings in the signed inspection or handover report so the landlord confirms them too.

  3. In the days after

    Close the loop

    • Register or take over the new account

Use the supplier's registration or moving page with the key date and the opening reading, unless the landlord holds the account.

    • End the account at the old address

Report the move for the old address with the closing reading and a forwarding address. It is a separate task, even with the same supplier.

    • Check both settlements

Compare the final bill and the first advance with your dates and readings, and ask for a correction straight away if they differ.

Two addresses, two separate tasks

A move touches two water accounts: the one you start at the new home and the one you end at the old home. Even when both addresses have the same supplier, the start and the end are often separate requests with their own dates and readings. Treat them as two tasks and you avoid the most common moving problem, a forgotten account that keeps charging advances for a home you no longer live in.

Your new home

Start or take over the account

  • Confirm the supplier with its address check and whether the landlord already holds the account.
  • Register from the date you receive the keys, with the opening meter reading and meter number.
  • Choose a sensible advance amount: the supplier usually bases it on the home and the household size.
  • Keep the confirmation and check the start date and opening reading in your new account.

Your old home

End the account and settle up

  • Report the move for the old address, also when the new home has the same supplier.
  • Submit the closing reading from key-return day, backed by a photo and the handover report.
  • Leave a forwarding address or email so the final bill and any refund reach you.
  • Stop or adjust the direct debit only after the final settlement has been paid or refunded.

Keys overlap? If you hold the keys to both homes for a while, you are usually responsible for both addresses during that period. Register the new home from its key date and end the old one on the day you hand back those keys, not on the day you move your belongings.

Key-day record

What to write down when the keys change hands

The reading at the moment of handover is the line between your water and someone else's. Suppliers ask for it when you register and when you leave, and without it they estimate, which can put the previous tenant's use on your first bill. Use this card as a template for each address, keep it with your lease and take the photos before you start unpacking.

  • Take the photo close enough to read every digit, including the black and red wheels, and the meter number in the same shot.
  • Cannot reach the meter? Ask the landlord or building manager for access or a dated reading instead of guessing.
  • No meter at all? Note that in the handover report and ask which billing arrangement applies to the home.

Special situations

Situations that change the moving steps

The standard checklist assumes one household, one meter and an account in your own name. Many rentals work differently: water may sit in the service charges, several homes can share a meter, older homes may have no meter at all, and a move between regions means two different companies. Here is what changes in each of those situations and what to ask before you register anything.

  • Water is included in the rent

Do not register yourself. Ask the landlord how water is settled, for example through the annual statement of service charges, and keep the key-day reading anyway.

  • A meter shared with other homes

The landlord or building owner usually holds the account and divides the costs. Ask how your share is calculated and which reading applies to your move-in date.

  • No individual water meter

The supplier bills the home another way, for example by property features in parts of Amsterdam. Confirm the billing basis instead of submitting a zero reading.

  • Two homes at the same time

With overlapping keys you are responsible for both addresses for a while. Plan both the registration and the cancellation around the real key dates.

  • Moving to another supply region

The new home has a different company. Register with the new supplier and report the move separately to the old one, because they do not exchange your details.

  • Someone already registered at the address

Some suppliers close the previous account automatically when a new resident registers. Others need both sides to act. Check your supplier's moving page.

Supplier by supplier

How each water company handles a move

The steps above apply everywhere, but the 10 drinking-water companies each organise moving in their own way. Some register the new home and close the old account in one request, some close the old account automatically when the next resident registers, and some need two separate requests. Open your supplier for its own moving rules, taken from its official pages, with direct links to its moving, registration and meter-reading forms.

Moving with Brabant WaterNorth Brabant

Existing customers should use the moving flow and deal with both the new and old address. Brabant Water explicitly notes that overlapping key dates can mean water costs at both homes. Do not treat changing the postal address as a completed move. At each key handover, record the actual reading and meter number if the home has a meter, photograph the display and keep the handover report. For an unmetered supply, confirm the supplier’s or landlord’s billing arrangement instead. Use the dates you receive and return the keys, which may differ from the day you move your belongings. Keep the supplier’s confirmation and a forwarding address for the final bill.

Moving with DuneaSouth Holland

Close the old supply separately, even when the new address is also served by Dunea. Record the final reading when you return the keys. Dunea warns that cancellation reported more than sixty days after handover may be dated from receipt; contact customer service immediately if you are late.

Moving with EvidesSouth Holland, Zeeland, North Brabant

Use the moving choice guide after receiving or returning the keys. Evides allows an extra address during an overlap. If the key date changes or the move involves its Belgian border service area, contact customer service rather than forcing an unsuitable online address.

Moving with OasenSouth Holland, Utrecht

Deregister the old address separately and register the new one if Oasen also supplies it. Correct a changed key date in Mijn Oasen. Submit dated readings for both homes and retain the final invoice; do not rely solely on the next tenant to close your account.

Moving with PWNNorth Holland

Report the new address and deregister the old one through Mijn PWN. PWN sends reading requests for the handover dates. Its own online moving and cancellation service is free; paid third-party cancellation services are unnecessary for this process.

Moving with VitensGelderland, Overijssel, Utrecht, Friesland, Flevoland, Drenthe, North Holland

Use the moving choice guide for the old and new address and provide the relevant dated readings. Vitens explicitly accommodates temporary overlap while you prepare the new home. If you move outside its area, close the old contract and register with the supplier at the destination.

Moving with Waterbedrijf GroningenGroningen

Register the new address and deregister the old one, including when staying within the region. Provide the final reading, key-return date and a forwarding address. The supplier's guidance also addresses a new payer after a household change; contact customer service when responsibility is unclear.

Moving with WaternetNorth Holland

Deregister your old drinking-water address in Mijn Waternet and register the new one where needed. If a new resident has already registered, Waternet may have closed the old account automatically; check the confirmation and forwarding details instead of assuming the final bill will find you.

Moving with WMD DrinkwaterDrenthe

Existing WMD customers can report both addresses through the moving process. Deregister if the new address has another supplier or if you join a household with an existing account. WMD's FAQ allows online reporting up to two months after the key date; contact it promptly if outside that window.

Moving with WMLLimburg

For a move within the region, register the new address under the existing customer details and close the old address after key return. WML permits temporary accounts for both homes. It warns that deregistration is only backdated by up to one month, so do not leave the old contract running.

Moving FAQ

Questions about water when moving house

Answers about timing, cancelling the old account, holding two homes at once, missing meter readings, water included in the rent and the final bill when you move between Dutch rentals.

When should I arrange water for my new rental?

Arrange it around the key handover. Many suppliers let you register shortly before or after the move date, using the date you receive the keys and the opening meter reading. Exact deadlines differ per company, so follow the timing on your supplier's moving page.

Do I need to cancel water at my old address myself?

Usually yes. Registering the new home does not always end the old contract, even with the same supplier. Report the move for the old address with the closing reading, unless your supplier confirms that it closes the old account automatically when the next resident registers.

I have the keys to two homes for a few weeks. Do I pay water for both?

In most cases you are responsible for both addresses while you hold both sets of keys. Register the new home from its key date and end the old one on the day you return those keys. Fixed charges usually apply per address for the period you are responsible.

I forgot to take a meter reading. What now?

Ask the landlord or the next tenant for a dated reading as close to the handover as possible, and tell the supplier which date it belongs to. Without a reading the supplier estimates the use, which can shift consumption between you and the other occupant.

Water is included in my rent. Is there anything to arrange?

You do not register with the supplier, but record the meter reading on key day if your home has its own meter. When you leave, check that the service-charge statement covers the right period and ask for a specification if water is divided between homes.

I am moving within the same supply area. Is that one request?

Sometimes. Several suppliers let you report a move for both addresses in one form, but others treat the new registration and the old cancellation separately. Check your supplier's moving page and make sure both addresses end up with the right dates and readings.

When do I receive the final water bill for my old home?

After you report the move and the closing reading, the supplier sends a final settlement for the old address. It compares your advance payments with the actual use and fixed charges, so you either pay the difference or receive a refund. Leave a forwarding address or email so it reaches you.
