Your Vitens water account: understand the home, the move and the next step

An address check comes before assumptions about regional coverage

Vitens serves a large part of the central, eastern and northern Netherlands. Its customer tools distinguish registering a home, ending an old account and managing an existing contract. Review this profile for coverage and practical account guidance, then check the individual property and whether the landlord already includes water in your rental arrangement.

About Vitens

Who Vitens is, where it supplies drinking water and what renters should check first.

Vitens supplies drinking water across a large part of the central, eastern and northern Netherlands. Its customer tools separate registering a home, ending an old account and managing an existing contract in Mijn Vitens. For renters, the key questions are who pays the supplier, which meter belongs to the home, and which readings apply at key handover.

Where Vitens supplies water

Vitens describes its main region as Friesland, Flevoland, Overijssel, Gelderland and Utrecht. This is not an exclusive province-level rule: other suppliers serve some border areas and parts of Utrecht. Check the actual property rather than assigning a supplier from the province alone.

Your Vitens account, step by step

From registering a new home to the final bill: how Vitens handles each step, with a direct link to the official page for it.

  1. Step 1

    Register a home with Vitens

Choose the new-customer registration if you are not already the account holder. Vitens asks for the key date and the opening reading. Its moving guidance offers a reminder if the keys have not yet been received; setting that reminder is not the same as completing the registration. Before registering, check your tenancy agreement and ask who holds the water account. A separate meter does not by itself prove that you need a direct contract: the landlord may invoice the water. Confirm the arrangement to avoid paying twice.

  2. Step 2

    Meter readings for Vitens

Use the official reading link and the details in the supplier's request. Keep the move-in reading for comparison with the first account. An estimated reading is not a measurement; ask for a correction if the account does not match your handover evidence. Where the home has a meter, check that it serves your home, especially in a shared meter cupboard. Follow the supplier’s display instructions and do not invent a reading if access is impossible. Ask the landlord or building manager for access or a dated reading. For a genuinely unmetered home, confirm the applicable billing arrangement instead.

    Submit a reading
  3. Step 3

    Moving with Vitens

Use the moving choice guide for the old and new address and provide the relevant dated readings. Vitens explicitly accommodates temporary overlap while you prepare the new home. If you move outside its area, close the old contract and register with the supplier at the destination. At each key handover, record the actual reading and meter number if the home has a meter, photograph the display and keep the handover report. For an unmetered supply, confirm the supplier’s or landlord’s billing arrangement instead. Use the dates you receive and return the keys, which may differ from the day you move your belongings. Keep the supplier’s confirmation and a forwarding address for the final bill.

  4. Step 4

    Bills and tariffs at Vitens

Mijn Vitens provides account and payment management, including help with payments. The advance reflects expected use and may change when tariffs change. Check the fixed charge, water-consumption charge and tax lines separately, and compare paid advances with the annual or final settlement. An instalment is an advance, not an all-inclusive price. For a metered supply, compare opening and closing readings; for an unmetered supply, verify the applicable units or billing category. Check the billing dates, consumption, fixed charges and tax lines on the settlement. A short tenancy or low consumption does not automatically remove applicable fixed charges. Use the current official tariff schedule rather than a national average to budget.

Questions about Vitens

Answers about registering, moving, meter readings, bills and water quality with Vitens, based on its official pages.

Can Vitens finish my registration before I receive the keys?

Vitens's registration page asks you to complete the registration after receiving the keys, when you have the handover reading. If the date is still ahead, you can request an email reminder. Keep that reminder separate from the eventual confirmation that Vitens has registered your supply.

Is a meter photo compulsory when I submit a reading to Vitens?

Vitens lets you submit a photo or enter the reading yourself through the route in its request. If a reading is far from the expected value, it may ask for a photo to verify it. A clear handover photo is worth keeping even when the form does not require an upload.

My housing association arranged the tenancy. Has it also arranged Vitens?

Vitens tells you to register yourself unless you have specifically agreed that the housing association will do it. Ask who is handling the water registration and keep the confirmation. A handed-over key, a working tap or an account for another utility does not confirm your Vitens contract.

Can my Vitens account cover the old and new home during an overlap?

Vitens's moving process lets existing customers register an additional address while keeping the old one. Report each address's actual key date and meter reading. Adding the new home is not the same as closing the old one; complete its cancellation when your responsibility for that address ends.

I cannot pay the Vitens bill by the due date. Where should I start?

Vitens offers payment-extension and payment-arrangement options through Mijn Vitens. Check there promptly or contact customer service if you cannot use the portal or need a different solution. Changing a future advance is a separate action and does not itself settle an already issued bill.

Is the hardness shown by Vitens an exact measurement at my tap?

Vitens's local water information describes production areas. Its hardness guidance explains that values can vary where supplies from several sources are mixed. Use the local result as supplier information and check the unit your appliance expects; it is not a sample taken from the pipes inside your particular apartment.

Can I choose a different water supplier at this address?

Drinking-water supply is organised by service area. Check your address with Vitens or the Vewin finder; a lower tariff elsewhere does not make that company available at your home. You must still arrange registration or a move when you are the account holder.

Water is included in my rent. Should I register myself?

Ask the landlord who holds the supplier contract and how your water costs are settled. If the landlord supplies and bills the water, first clarify that arrangement instead of opening a second account. Ask for the supplier invoice, relevant readings and an explanation of any shared-cost allocation.

I cannot find the meter or the opening reading. What should I do?

Look in the handover report and ask the landlord or building manager which meter serves the property. Photograph the current display and contact Vitens if the handover reading is missing. Do not submit a neighbour's reading, a guessed value or an invented zero. If the home is genuinely unmetered, ask which billing category applies rather than inventing a reading.

There is a leak or no hot water in my rental. Who should I contact?

Use the supplier's official fault page for a mains outage or suspected network problem. For a leak inside the building, shared pressure equipment or a hot-water appliance, also contact the landlord or building manager promptly. A hot-water-only fault does not establish a drinking-water network outage.
