About WMD Drinkwater

Who WMD Drinkwater is, where it supplies drinking water and what renters should check first.

WMD Drinkwater is the regional drinking-water supplier for much of Drenthe. Its moving process lets renters prepare early and add the actual handover reading later. For renters, the key questions are who pays the supplier, which meter belongs to the home, and which readings apply at key handover.

Where WMD Drinkwater supplies water

Drenthe is not served by WMD alone: Waterbedrijf Groningen and Vitens also serve parts of the province. WMD itself directs uncertain customers to Vewin's postcode check. Confirm the full address, particularly in the north and west of the province.

Your WMD Drinkwater account, step by step

From registering a new home to the final bill: how WMD Drinkwater handles each step, with a direct link to the official page for it.

  1. Step 1

Register a home with WMD Drinkwater

Use the new-customer option linked from WMD's official moving page. Registration can start three months before key handover. If the reading is not yet known, supply the date and other details first; WMD says it sends a reminder the day before the key date. Before registering, check your tenancy agreement and ask who holds the water account. A separate meter does not by itself prove that you need a direct contract: the landlord may invoice the water. Confirm the arrangement to avoid paying twice.

  2. Step 2

    Meter readings for WMD Drinkwater

WMD has a separate route for submitting the handover reading with the recording number from its letter or email. It normally requests an annual reading in December. Photograph both old and new meters on the relevant key dates. Where the home has a meter, check that it serves your home, especially in a shared meter cupboard. Follow the supplier’s display instructions and do not invent a reading if access is impossible. Ask the landlord or building manager for access or a dated reading. For a genuinely unmetered home, confirm the applicable billing arrangement instead.

  3. Step 3

    Moving with WMD Drinkwater

Existing WMD customers can report both addresses through the moving process. Deregister if the new address has another supplier or if you join a household with an existing account. WMD's FAQ allows online reporting up to two months after the key date; contact it promptly if outside that window. At each key handover, record the actual reading and meter number if the home has a meter, photograph the display and keep the handover report. For an unmetered supply, confirm the supplier’s or landlord’s billing arrangement instead. Use the dates you receive and return the keys, which may differ from the day you move your belongings. Keep the supplier’s confirmation and a forwarding address for the final bill.

  4. Step 4

Bills and tariffs at WMD Drinkwater

WMD publishes distinct tariff categories for an individual meter, certain unmetered flats and a central meter. Confirm which category applies before using a per-cubic-metre rate. Its displayed tariff table excludes water tax and VAT, so the table alone is not the final payable amount. An instalment is an advance, not an all-inclusive price. For a metered supply, compare opening and closing readings; for an unmetered supply, verify the applicable units or billing category. Check the billing dates, consumption, fixed charges and tax lines on the settlement. A short tenancy or low consumption does not automatically remove applicable fixed charges. Use the current official tariff schedule rather than a national average to budget.

Questions about WMD Drinkwater

Answers about registering, moving, meter readings, bills and water quality with WMD Drinkwater, based on its official pages.

How does WMD handle a move reported before I can read the new meter?

WMD's moving FAQ allows online reporting from three months before until two months after the key date. If the future reading is not yet known, enter the date; WMD says it sends a reminder the day before handover. Record the actual stand when you receive the keys rather than guessing it in advance.

Does cancelling my WMD account mean water will physically be disconnected?

WMD's moving FAQ says a cancellation does not physically disconnect the address. It ends your registration and leads to a final bill. Do still report your end date and reading: a running tap neither proves that your old account is closed nor that the next resident has registered.

Why does WMD ask for an opname number when I send a meter reading?

The opname number connects a reading to WMD's particular request. Its annual reading round is in December; a move is a separate reason to record a stand. Use the details in the relevant request and contact WMD if you do not have them, rather than reusing an unrelated old code.

Which WMD tariff applies if my apartment has no individual water meter?

WMD's tariff schedule distinguishes individually metered homes, homes behind a central meter and unmetered arrangements. First establish which category your apartment belongs to and who holds the supply account. A standard example for a separately metered house is not enough to check a shared-building charge.

Can WMD's postcode tool tell me which quality report to read?

Yes. WMD's quality information lets you find the production station supplying your address and consult its reports. Check the station and reporting period instead of treating one measurement as a fixed value for all of Drenthe. Ask WMD if your address or a report's meaning is unclear.

Do I need to request a new WMD connection for an existing rented home?

If the home already has a working connection and you are simply taking over water payment, use customer registration or the moving process. WMD's new-connection route is for work on the physical connection, such as a new building or connection change. Check with the landlord before requesting such work for a rental.

Can I choose a different water supplier at this address?

Drinking-water supply is organised by service area. Check your address with WMD Drinkwater or the Vewin finder; a lower tariff elsewhere does not make that company available at your home. You must still arrange registration or a move when you are the account holder.

Water is included in my rent. Should I register myself?

Ask the landlord who holds the supplier contract and how your water costs are settled. If the landlord supplies and bills the water, first clarify that arrangement instead of opening a second account. Ask for the supplier invoice, relevant readings and an explanation of any shared-cost allocation.

I cannot find the meter or the opening reading. What should I do?

Look in the handover report and ask the landlord or building manager which meter serves the property. Photograph the current display and contact WMD Drinkwater if the handover reading is missing. Do not submit a neighbour's reading, a guessed value or an invented zero. If the home is genuinely unmetered, ask which billing category applies rather than inventing a reading.

There is a leak or no hot water in my rental. Who should I contact?

Use the supplier's official fault page for a mains outage or suspected network problem. For a leak inside the building, shared pressure equipment or a hot-water appliance, also contact the landlord or building manager promptly. A hot-water-only fault does not establish a drinking-water network outage.
