Prepare a PWN water account around the home you are actually renting

North Holland is a starting point, rather than one uniform supply area

PWN supplies much of North Holland outside Waternet's Amsterdam-area network. Its moving information helps you organise the account tasks around key handover. Use this supplier profile to check the coverage guidance, understand the registration route and locate meter-reading and billing information before arranging water for the property.

About PWN

Who PWN is, where it supplies drinking water and what renters should check first.

PWN supplies drinking water in much of North Holland outside Waternet's Amsterdam-area network. Its moving guide is useful for renters who want to organise the administrative steps before key handover. For renters, the key questions are who pays the supplier, which meter belongs to the home, and which readings apply at key handover.

Where PWN supplies water

North Holland is shared with other suppliers; Amsterdam and surrounding Waternet-served places are important exceptions. PWN points customers to Vewin's finder. Use that as orientation and ask the supplier about the full address if a boundary or postcode result is unclear.

Your PWN account, step by step

From registering a new home to the final bill: how PWN handles each step, with a direct link to the official page for it.

  1. Step 1

    Register a home with PWN

PWN allows a new home to be registered from eight weeks before key handover through Mijn PWN. Provide the actual meter reading and serial number on the handover date. If your previous home's water was paid through rent or service charges, choose the new-customer route. Before registering, check your tenancy agreement and ask who holds the water account. A separate meter does not by itself prove that you need a direct contract: the landlord may invoice the water. Confirm the arrangement to avoid paying twice.

  2. Step 2

    Meter readings for PWN

Follow the annual reading request and retain its recording number. PWN says that a smart-meter customer still supplies a reading when moving or when explicitly requested. Do not assume a smart meter completes the move automatically. Where the home has a meter, check that it serves your home, especially in a shared meter cupboard. Follow the supplier’s display instructions and do not invent a reading if access is impossible. Ask the landlord or building manager for access or a dated reading. For a genuinely unmetered home, confirm the applicable billing arrangement instead.

    Submit a reading
  3. Step 3

    Moving with PWN

Report the new address and deregister the old one through Mijn PWN. PWN sends reading requests for the handover dates. Its own online moving and cancellation service is free; paid third-party cancellation services are unnecessary for this process. At each key handover, record the actual reading and meter number if the home has a meter, photograph the display and keep the handover report. For an unmetered supply, confirm the supplier’s or landlord’s billing arrangement instead. Use the dates you receive and return the keys, which may differ from the day you move your belongings. Keep the supplier’s confirmation and a forwarding address for the final bill.

  4. Step 4

    Bills and tariffs at PWN

PWN distinguishes consumption and fixed charges, including different arrangements behind a central water meter. Check the appropriate meter capacity and whether a quoted amount includes water tax. The tariff for a separate household meter should not automatically be applied to a shared building supply. An instalment is an advance, not an all-inclusive price. For a metered supply, compare opening and closing readings; for an unmetered supply, verify the applicable units or billing category. Check the billing dates, consumption, fixed charges and tax lines on the settlement. A short tenancy or low consumption does not automatically remove applicable fixed charges. Use the current official tariff schedule rather than a national average to budget.

Questions about PWN

Answers about registering, moving, meter readings, bills and water quality with PWN, based on its official pages.

How early can I put my new home on my PWN account?

PWN accepts a new-home registration or move from eight weeks before key handover. Use Mijn PWN to enter the dates, then supply the actual readings for the handovers. If your previous water was included in rent and you never held a PWN contract, follow the new-customer route instead.

I have a smart PWN water meter. Do I still need a reading when I move?

Yes. PWN explicitly asks smart-meter customers for a reading when moving or when it sends a specific request. An automatically read meter does not remove the need to arrange the account change. Keep a handover photo and submit the requested information rather than assuming the system has closed the old address.

Why does PWN ask for the meter's serial number as well as the reading?

PWN's moving guide asks for both on the key-handover date, and says the serial number is around the edge of the meter glass. The reading shows the recorded consumption; the serial number helps identify which meter it belongs to. That is particularly useful in an apartment's shared meter cupboard.

Does PWN use the same fixed charge for an individual and a central meter?

No single household figure covers every arrangement. PWN's tariff page distinguishes an individual meter, different meter capacities and homes behind a central meter. Identify your actual setup before comparing a quoted fixed charge with your bill, and check whether the displayed amount includes water tax.

Do I need a paid company to cancel or move my PWN contract?

No. PWN says you can arrange the move or cancellation directly in Mijn PWN for free, with customer-service help if needed. A third party may charge for doing the same administration. Keep PWN's own confirmation and the final reading rather than treating an intermediary's receipt as proof that PWN has processed it.

Where can I find the composition of the water PWN actually supplies to my area?

PWN publishes laboratory reports by supply or production area, with quarterly and yearly results. Its composition page is the useful starting point for hardness or aquarium-related questions. Select the relevant area and reporting period; a figure from another PWN production site is not automatically the right one for your home.

Can I choose a different water supplier at this address?

Drinking-water supply is organised by service area. Check your address with PWN or the Vewin finder; a lower tariff elsewhere does not make that company available at your home. You must still arrange registration or a move when you are the account holder.

Water is included in my rent. Should I register myself?

Ask the landlord who holds the supplier contract and how your water costs are settled. If the landlord supplies and bills the water, first clarify that arrangement instead of opening a second account. Ask for the supplier invoice, relevant readings and an explanation of any shared-cost allocation.

I cannot find the meter or the opening reading. What should I do?

Look in the handover report and ask the landlord or building manager which meter serves the property. Photograph the current display and contact PWN if the handover reading is missing. Do not submit a neighbour's reading, a guessed value or an invented zero. If the home is genuinely unmetered, ask which billing category applies rather than inventing a reading.

There is a leak or no hot water in my rental. Who should I contact?

Use the supplier's official fault page for a mains outage or suspected network problem. For a leak inside the building, shared pressure equipment or a hot-water appliance, also contact the landlord or building manager promptly. A hot-water-only fault does not establish a drinking-water network outage.
