Wainscoting (lambrisering) is a form of decorative wall paneling that historically served to protect walls and provide a degree of insulation. In modern Dutch homes, it is primarily an aesthetic feature that adds a sense of classic character and sophistication. The paneling, typically made of wood, covers the lower portion of a wall, usually up to the height of a chair rail or about one meter from the floor. You are most likely to encounter wainscoting in pre-war properties, such as traditional canal houses (grachtenpanden) and townhouses (herenhuizen), where it was part of the original architectural style. It is also used in modern renovations to evoke a classic, high-end feel. While visually appealing, tenants should note its condition on the check-in report, as damaged or scuffed paneling can be costly for a landlord to repair.
