In the Netherlands, the term 'utility room' is most accurately translated as bijkeuken, which literally means 'by-kitchen' or 'side-kitchen'. This name perfectly captures its typical location and function. A bijkeuken is a practical, multi-purpose workroom, almost always situated directly off the kitchen, serving as a transitional space to the garden or back door. It is a feature commonly found in ground-floor apartments (benedenwoningen) and single-family homes (eengezinswoningen), but is a considerable luxury in upper-floor apartments due to space constraints. Its role is to house the bulky, noisy, and messy aspects of household management that one would prefer to keep out of the main living areas and kitchen. This typically includes the washer and dryer, an extra refrigerator or freezer, storage for cleaning supplies, and a place to hang coats and leave muddy boots. It is the hardworking engine room of the Dutch home, valued for its function over its form.
When a rental listing advertises a bijkeuken, a prospective tenant should have a clear set of expectations, but also a critical checklist. At a minimum, it should contain the official washer/dryer hookup (wasmachineaansluiting). The quality of a utility room can vary immensely. In older homes, it might be a simple, cold, and basic space with a concrete floor and minimal insulation. In more modern or renovated properties, it can be a well-finished room with proper flooring, cabinetry, and a countertop for folding laundry. Key things to check during a viewing are: Is there adequate ventilation, especially if a dryer will be used? Is there sufficient space for both a washer and a dryer, which are often stacked (op elkaar) in the Netherlands to save floor space? Are there enough electrical sockets to power multiple appliances? A space simply labeled 'utility room' on a floor plan might in reality be a glorified cupboard, so in-person verification is essential.
It is important not to confuse a bijkeuken with a dedicated laundry room (washok). While a bijkeuken almost always contains the laundry facilities, its purpose is broader. It's a general-purpose storage and utility space. A dedicated washok, on the other hand, is a room whose sole purpose is laundry. These are much rarer in the Netherlands and are considered a true luxury. The bijkeuken concept reflects the Dutch premium on space and practicality; why have a separate room just for laundry when a multi-functional space can serve several needs at once? The skeptical tenant should view the term 'utility room' as a promise of practical space, but must investigate whether that space is genuinely useful or just a small, unventilated annex that barely fits a washing machine.
