Stainless steel appliances provide a modern look but are a superficial feature that says nothing about the actual quality or efficiency of the equipment.

Stainless steel appliances (roestvrij stalen apparatuur, often abbreviated as RVS) refers to kitchen equipment such as refrigerators, ovens, extractor hoods, and dishwashers that are finished with a stainless steel exterior. This look has become the default signifier for a modern, renovated, or high-end kitchen in the Dutch rental market. The sleek, metallic finish is associated with professional kitchens and is used by landlords to give a space an instant visual upgrade, suggesting quality and cleanliness. It has largely replaced the older standard of white-enameled appliances. In any listing for a newly renovated apartment, the mention of stainless steel appliances is almost guaranteed.
A savvy tenant should view this feature with extreme skepticism. 'Stainless steel' is purely a cosmetic finish; it is not a brand, a feature, or an indicator of quality. Landlords frequently use this aesthetic to mask the installation of cheap, unreliable, and energy-inefficient appliances from obscure brands. A kitchen can be filled with gleaming RVS appliances that look great in photos but perform poorly, break down frequently, or consume excessive amounts of energy. The most important information is not the finish, but the brand of the appliance (is it a reputable make like Siemens or a cheap unknown?) and, crucially, its energy efficiency label (energielabel). A refrigerator with a poor energy label can add a significant amount to a tenant's monthly electricity bill. Furthermore, stainless steel surfaces are notoriously difficult to keep clean, showing every fingerprint, smudge, and water spot, requiring constant polishing to maintain the 'clean' look they are supposed to represent.
