A kitchen island (kookeiland) is a large, freestanding counter unit in the center of a kitchen that is separate from the main perimeter counters. It is a major architectural feature that transforms the kitchen from a purely functional workspace into the social hub of the home. An island can serve multiple purposes: it can house the sink or cooktop, provide extensive extra counter space for food preparation, include storage cabinets and drawers, and often incorporates an overhang to create a breakfast bar for casual seating. It is a hallmark of large, open-plan living spaces and is heavily featured in design magazines as the centerpiece of a modern, luxurious home.
Given the high premium on space in the Netherlands, a true kitchen island is a feature of pure luxury and is consequently very rare in the rental market. The vast majority of Dutch kitchens, particularly in apartments, are designed as compact galley kitchens or L-shaped layouts to maximize efficiency in a limited footprint. A kitchen island requires a significant amount of surrounding free space to allow for comfortable movement and the opening of appliance doors and drawers. Squeezing an island into a kitchen that is too small can create a frustratingly cramped and inefficient workspace. Therefore, a tenant will only encounter this feature in very large, high-end apartments, converted lofts, or spacious single-family homes. It is a clear indicator that the property is in the upper segment of the market, and the rent will be priced accordingly.
