Corporate housing refers to fully furnished, temporary accommodations, typically high-end apartments, leased by companies for their relocating employees.

A Cut Above the Rest

Corporate housing is a specific, premium tier of the temporary accommodation market. It almost always consists of fully furnished and serviced apartments, often located in modern residential buildings in financially strategic locations—close to business districts, international schools, or major transport hubs. Unlike a standard rental, corporate housing is a comprehensive, all-inclusive package. The rent includes all utilities (gas, water, electricity), high-speed internet, television, and often a weekly cleaning service. The properties are 'turnkey' ready, meaning an employee can arrive with just their suitcase and find a fully functional home, complete with kitchenware, linens, and appliances. The target client is not the employee themselves, but their employer, who is willing to pay a significant premium for a seamless, hassle-free housing solution for their valuable talent.

This sector is dominated by specialized agencies that manage portfolios of high-quality properties. They act as a single point of contact for the corporation, handling everything from booking and billing to maintenance and check-out. The defining characteristic is the level of service and the quality of the product, which is designed to be a home-away-from-home, far more comfortable and spacious than an extended stay in a hotel. However, this premium service level comes with a premium price tag, making it one of the most expensive forms of housing available. The costs are justifiable for a company as part of a strategic relocation package, but would be prohibitive for most individuals paying out-of-pocket.

The Resident's Experience and Its Limitations

For the relocating employee, living in corporate housing can feel like living in a bubble of convenience. It removes the immediate and immense stress of finding a home, buying furniture, and setting up accounts in a foreign country. This allows them to focus on their new role and on adapting to the work culture. The apartments are often in buildings populated by other expats in similar situations, which can provide an instant, though somewhat artificial, sense of community. While this experience is comfortable, it can also be isolating and detached from the reality of local life. The environment is often sterile and impersonal, lacking the unique character of a self-chosen home. It can delay the process of truly settling in and discovering the city on one's own terms.

Furthermore, corporate housing is, by its very nature, a temporary solution. The lease is typically for a fixed, short-term period—from one to six months—designed to cover the initial relocation phase. There is rarely an option to extend the stay indefinitely or to convert it into a permanent rental. This creates a hard deadline for the employee to find a long-term home in the notoriously competitive Dutch rental market. The comfort of the corporate apartment can sometimes breed complacency, leading to a last-minute scramble to find a place before the corporate lease expires. It's a gilded cage that provides immense initial comfort but ultimately serves as a waiting room for the real challenge of finding a permanent place to live.
