The Netherlands IS the Bike Score

Much like 'Walk Score', the branded 'Bike Score' metric is not used in the Netherlands. The concept is redundant in a country that is globally recognized as the pinnacle of cycling culture and infrastructure. The entire country would effectively receive a near-perfect score. However, for a local resident, there are crucial nuances and qualitative differences in 'bikeability' that determine the real-world convenience and pleasure of a location.

Beyond the Score: What Makes a Location 'Good' for Biking?

Since a baseline of excellent cycling infrastructure is a given, Dutch residents evaluate a location's bike-friendliness on a more granular level. Key factors include:

Quality of Bike Paths (Fietspaden): Are the paths separated from car traffic, wide, and smoothly paved with red asphalt? Or are you forced to share a narrow road with cars or navigate bumpy, brick-laid streets (kasseien)? A route with dedicated, high-quality paths is considered superior.

Directness of Routes: How direct is the cycling route to key destinations like the central station (Centraal Station) or the city center? Are there many traffic lights or obstacles like canals that require detours to the nearest bridge? A 3km direct route is far better than a 2km route that zig-zags through a complex street plan.

Secure Bicycle Parking (Fietsenstalling): This is a massive consideration. Does the apartment building have a secure, private, and easily accessible storage area for bikes? If not, you are forced to leave your bike on the street, where it is exposed to theft and vandalism. Proximity to a public, guarded bicycle parking facility (bewaakte fietsenstalling) is also a major plus.

Safety: While generally safe, some intersections are notoriously chaotic and poorly designed. Experienced locals know which junctions to avoid during rush hour.

How to Assess Bikeability Like a Local

When you view a property, don't just consider the apartment itself. Take a bike (you can rent an OV-fiets at any major station) and ride the key routes yourself. Cycle from the apartment to your potential workplace, to the nearest large supermarket, and to the city center. This practical test will tell you more than any theoretical score. It will reveal the quality of the pavement, the level of traffic stress, and the true time it takes to get around. This journey, not a number on a website, is the real Dutch bike score.
