While car parking is a luxury, the provision of adequate bicycle storage (fietsenstalling or fietsenberging) is considered a near-essential feature for practical daily life in the Netherlands. Given that most people own at least one bicycle, and bike theft is rampant, having a secure and convenient place to store your bike is a major factor in a property's livability. While not legally mandated in all older buildings, most modern apartment complexes are required by building codes to provide some form of bicycle storage. However, the term can cover anything from a world-class facility to a single, rusty bike rack.
The quality of bicycle storage provisions varies wildly. The Best: A secure, lockable, and well-lit communal room on the ground floor or in the basement, with proper racks that allow you to lock your bike's frame. Some new buildings even offer charging points for e-bikes. The Average: A designated area in a shared courtyard with outdoor staple racks (fietsnietjes). This offers a place to lock your frame but provides no protection from the rain. The Worst: An overcrowded, dark, and inaccessible basement room with no proper racks, forcing residents to cram bikes together. Or, even worse, no provision at all, forcing tenants to clutter hallways (a fire hazard) or leave their expensive bikes on the street. When viewing an apartment, always inspect the fietsenstalling as carefully as you inspect the kitchen.
The landlord or VvE is responsible for the maintenance of the provided bicycle storage facility. This includes ensuring the door locks work, the lighting is functional, and the space is kept reasonably clean. They are also responsible for periodically removing abandoned or derelict bicycles (fietswrakken) to free up space, a process that usually involves tagging bikes and giving owners a period of time to claim them before removal.
