Zutphen
Zutphen is the smaller IJssel town to the south, joined to Deventer by a direct Intercity, with a medieval skyline of towers and a quieter pace as the gateway to the Achterhoek.

- Easy commute
Deventer and Zutphen are neighbours on the same river and the same Intercity line, which runs from Zwolle through Deventer and Zutphen on towards Nijmegen. Zutphen is the smaller of the two, known as the tower city for its spires and described as one of the best-preserved medieval town centres of north-western Europe, and it is a rail hub of its own, with regional lines to Apeldoorn, Winterswijk and Hengelo. It works for people who like Deventer's character but want a smaller town, with the Achterhoek as its backyard.

Zutphen combines a compact medieval centre of brick houses along streets such as the Groenmarkt and Houtmarkt with post-war districts such as the Waterkwartier and the Zuidwijken, which mix single-family homes, apartments and maisonettes. Leesten is a newer district beside the hospital, and Warnsveld, a former neighbouring municipality, adds a village touch. Anthroposophic schools and shops give parts of town a distinct character. Compared with Deventer, the whole town is smaller and the old centre shapes daily life more.
