Enschede
Enschede is Hengelo's neighbour in the same Twente urban area: a university city with a car-free centre, joined by Intercity, Sprinter and bus lines.
- City feel
- Student friendly
- Easy commute
Hengelo and Enschede belong to one urban area, so a move between them keeps you in the same daily orbit: Intercity and Sprinter trains run straight between the two stations, buses link them via the University of Twente, and a cycle route joins the towns. What changes is the character of the place. Enschede is a university city, with the University of Twente on its green Drienerlo campus, Saxion and the ArtEZ arts academy, and a hospital, an insurer and a bank among its larger employers.

Hengelo has a rebuilt postwar centre, modernist districts such as Klein Driene and a company garden village. Enschede answers with former textile mills turned into housing and museums, the redeveloped Roombeek quarter and a traffic-free centre. Residential neighbourhoods such as Pathmos, Twekkelerveld, Hogeland and Bolhaar fill out the rest, and the student population makes rooms and studios a bigger part of the market, especially toward the campus.
