Amersfoort
Living in Amersfoort when you work in Utrecht: a walled medieval centre, its own head offices and a junction station with Intercity and Sprinter service toward Utrecht Centraal.
- City feel
- Easy commute
- Family friendly
Renters weigh Amersfoort against Utrecht when they want a complete town rather than a dormitory suburb. It has a medieval core around the Koppelpoort and the Eem, a major rail junction, and head offices of firms such as FrieslandCampina, Nutreco and Royal HaskoningDHV, so work can sit in town as well as in Utrecht. Amersfoort Centraal and Schothorst both have trains that run on to Utrecht Centraal, which keeps a job or friends in Utrecht within an ordinary rail trip.
What works
- Junction station with Intercity and Sprinter service
- Medieval core with gates, walls and the Eem
- Head offices that give a local job market
- Newer family districts such as Vathorst

Trade-offs
- Smaller student and culture scene than Utrecht
- Vathorst lies beyond the A1, away from the old centre
- No university campus in town

Amersfoort Centraal is the main junction: Intercity trains between Schiphol, Utrecht and the north-east call here, and Sprinters run between Utrecht and Zwolle. Schothorst gets an Intercity that comes from The Hague via Utrecht. Vathorst has Sprinters toward Hilversum and Amsterdam on the Utrecht-Kampen line, so check that a direct Utrecht train fits your hours before settling there. At the Utrecht end, Centraal has one of the largest bicycle garages anywhere.
The stock comes in clear layers. Inside the ring are medieval streets and wall houses; the Soesterkwartier is a long pre-war district north of the railway, while the Bergkwartier on the slopes south of it is a protected villa quarter. Later growth added Schothorst and Nieuwland, then the VINEX district Kattenbroek, known for adventurous architecture, and Vathorst, laid out around water north of the A1, where municipal plans favour ground-level family homes over flats. Next to Utrecht, family houses in newer districts weigh much more.
Neighbourhoods to search in Amersfoort
- VathorstNewer district north of the A1 laid out around water, with its own station, schools and shops; mostly ground-level family homes.
- KattenbroekVINEX-era district known nationally for distinctive architecture; a newer family alternative to Utrecht's Leidsche Rijn.
- SoesterkwartierLong pre-war district north of the railway, built as the town grew after the rail line arrived; compact, mixed housing.
- BergkwartierProtected villa quarter on the slopes south of the railway, close to the centre and the station.
- CommutersStrong fit
- Amersfoort is a rail town: the junction station and Schothorst both feed Utrecht Centraal, and Vathorst adds a Sprinter axis toward Hilversum and Amsterdam. That helps households whose work points north or west as well as to Utrecht. Evening and weekend patterns are worth checking per station, since the sources give no timetable.
- StudentsLimited fit
- Higher education in town is hogeschool-based: Hogeschool Utrecht runs programmes such as teacher training, pedagogy, software development and logistics, with the HKU Beiaardschool for music and SOMT for physiotherapy, plus the Evangelische Hogeschool. Anyone studying at Utrecht University would still ride to Utrecht, and the student scene is smaller.
- FamiliesStrong fit
- Vathorst was planned for families, with sports fields, schools and shops in the district and mostly ground-level homes, while Kattenbroek offers another newer family district. Schothorst borders Park Schothorst, the largest park in the city. Posters on Dutch parenting forums often call Vathorst child-friendly, with many young families and schools, though several find it bland and far from the centre; Kattenbroek is described as greener.
- ExpatsGood fit
- Amersfoort International School teaches the IB Primary Years Programme to younger children, in a building it shares with a Dutch primary school. Older pupils would look to schools in the Utrecht region, such as International School Utrecht. International employers, among them Yokogawa with its European headquarters, give some English-language workplaces.
- Singles and couplesGood fit
- The compact medieval centre with the Koppelpoort, Muurhuizen and the Eem gives evenings and weekends a real setting. It is a smaller scene than Utrecht, so couples who want bigger cultural choices ride back by train. Flats and terraced homes in the Eemkwartier and Hoefkwartier redevelopment areas suit one or two people.
Who should look elsewhere
Look elsewhere if daily access to Utrecht University and the Science Park matters most, because the universities sit in Utrecht, not here. Vathorst is also a modern family district beyond the A1, not an urban core for people after a dense street life.
