Utrecht
Utrecht is the bigger neighbour in the same province, with the Dom Tower, wharf-side canals, universities and direct trains from all three Amersfoort stations.
- City feel
- Student friendly
- Easy commute
Utrecht is the next step up from Amersfoort inside the same province: larger, younger and busier, with Utrecht University, Hogeschool Utrecht and the HKU arts school shaping daily life. Direct trains link all three Amersfoort stations with Utrecht Centraal, so the two cities already behave like one job and study region. Rabobank, NS and ProRail are based there, and Utrecht Science Park adds a research campus on the eastern side, reached by sneltram.

Utrecht's housing is layered differently from Amersfoort's: districts from the end of the nineteenth century such as Oudwijk, Wittevrouwen and Lombok ring the old core, interwar Tuindorp and Oog in Al follow, then post-war Overvecht and Kanaleneiland, and finally Leidsche Rijn in the west. Single-person households dominate, so smaller apartments and shared homes make up a large share of the supply, unlike Amersfoort, where a medieval centre is ringed by villa slopes and a newer growth district such as Vathorst.
