Utrecht
From leafy Hilversum, Utrecht means a full city instead of a garden town: canals and wharf cellars, a large university and the country's biggest rail hub, a direct Sprinter away.
- City feel
- Student friendly
- Easy commute
Hilversum renters who sometimes wish for more city around them will find it in Utrecht, which a Sprinter reaches directly from Hilversum station. Utrecht Centraal is the country's biggest station and busiest rail junction, home to the railway company's headquarters, which opens up work in many directions by train. The city adds a medieval canal centre under the Dom Tower, a large university with a strong student presence, and the Utrecht Science Park on its eastern side.

Where Hilversum is villas and garden suburbs, Utrecht is a dense, layered city: a canal-side medieval core, late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century districts around it, and newer expansion such as Leidsche Rijn to the west. Flats and compact homes tend to be more typical than detached villas, and students and a young population make up a large part of the rental market. Greenery exists but is woven into the urban fabric rather than being the town's backdrop.
