Schiedam
Schiedam pairs a canal-ringed old town and windmills with metro, Intercity and Sprinter at one station, right beside Rotterdam, with lower-scale and more varied housing.
- Easy commute
- City feel
A renter who works in Rotterdam but finds the big city too monolithic can look at Schiedam, which borders it on the west. Schiedam Centrum is one station for Intercity and Sprinter trains and for metro lines A, B and C, so the daily trip does not depend on a car. The jenever-distillery past has given way to a mainly residential role in the Rotterdam region, and large projects such as Schieveste and the Glasbuurt are adding homes.

Look near Schiedam Centrum, where Intercity and Sprinter trains towards Rotterdam, The Hague and Dordrecht meet metro lines A, B and C. Off-peak, line A turns back at this station, while line B carries on to the Hoek van Holland coast. Tram and bus lines serve Nieuwland and Groenoord, and the metro stops Parkweg and Troelstralaan lie inside Nieuwland. Groenoord sits directly at A20 and A4 junctions, which suits drivers. Check evening and weekend patterns in the journey planner.
The stock sits in clear layers. The old core inside the canals has historic merchant and distillery buildings. The postwar districts to the north are largely apartment blocks: Groenoord is mostly flats of six, eight and twelve storeys, Nieuwland has walk-up blocks with some taller flats plus family houses added in its renewal, and Kethel keeps an old village heart next to the Tuindorp garden suburb. Where central Rotterdam is high-rise, Schiedam's historic centre is low and tied to the water.
Neighbourhoods to search in Schiedam
- CentrumHistoric canal-ringed core around the Lange Haven, with the Jenever Museum, windmills and old distillery buildings; steps from Schiedam Centrum station and its metro.
- NieuwlandFirst postwar district, next to the station: mostly walk-up blocks with taller flats, renewed with family houses, and the metro stops Parkweg and Troelstralaan inside it.
- KethelFormer village in the north with a protected village view and the Tuindorp garden-suburb district; a quieter, lower-key base within the city.
- CommutersStrong fit
- Schiedam Centrum is the case for commuters: Intercity, Sprinter and metro share one site, so Rotterdam, The Hague or Dordrecht can be reached without changing mode, and Amsterdam-bound Intercity trains run through Leiden and Haarlem. Off-peak, line A still reaches the station and line B continues to the coast.
- StudentsLimited fit
- Schiedam has no university campus of its own. Its education is secondary and vocational: the Stedelijk Gymnasium, Lyceum Schravenlant and Lentiz LIFE. A student at an institution elsewhere in the region would live here as a rail and metro commuter, and should expect the student social scene to sit outside town.
- FamiliesGood fit
- Kethel keeps a village core and a garden-suburb district, and the eastern edge of Groenoord near Tuindorp is relatively green, so family-oriented streets exist inside the city. Many schools operate in town, led by the old Stedelijk Gymnasium, and the Vlietland Hospital serves the area. Nieuwland's renewal has added family houses to what was mostly apartment blocks.
- ExpatsLimited fit
- No source names an international school or an expat desk in Schiedam, so newcomers should expect Dutch-language services and look to the wider region for English-language support. The municipal figures do show a visible Central and Eastern European community, which gives the town a mixed everyday character.
- Singles and couplesGood fit
- The old town gives couples and singles a social base of their own: the harbours around the Lange Haven, the National Jenever Museum, the Stedelijk Museum with its CoBrA collection, and festivals such as the Brandersfeesten. Newer flats near the station and in Schieveste suit small households who still want Rotterdam's larger nightlife a metro ride away.
Who should look elsewhere
Skip Schiedam if you want a university-town scene or a big international-city setting on the doorstep, or if you expect low-rise streets everywhere: Groenoord is dominated by high-rise flats, and the best-connected addresses sit in the busy rail, metro and motorway corridor.
