Deventer
Deventer swaps Apeldoorn's spread-out Veluwe setting for a Hanseatic old town on the IJssel, with Intercity and Sprinter trains covering the short stretch between the two.
- City feel
- Easy commute
Apeldoorn and Deventer share a railway: the Apeldoorn-Deventer line carries Intercity trains and a stopping Sprinter, so a move east is a direct ride rather than a transfer, and trains toward Amersfoort and Utrecht leave from both. Renters who like Apeldoorn's offices and services but want something older and more walkable often look here. Deventer grew as a Hanseatic trading city, and the Brink square, the Waag and the Bergkwartier survive from that time; Wolters Kluwer, Auping and a Saxion campus add local work and student life.

Apeldoorn spreads out, with its western half on the forested Veluwe ridge and its eastern half in the IJssel valley. Deventer is more riverside: a medieval centre around the Brink, the Bergkwartier on its old river dune and the Proosdij, one of the country's oldest stone houses, with the town reaching out to districts such as Colmschate, which has its own station. Older townhouses and conversions tend to set the tone near the centre, a different feel from Apeldoorn's open layout at the forest edge.
