Deventer
Deventer is another Hanseatic city on the IJssel, joined to Zwolle by a direct Intercity, with a tree-lined Brink square, a busy festival calendar and a compact, riverside centre.
- City feel
- Easy commute
Anyone drawn to Zwolle's Hanseatic centre will recognise Deventer: same river, same medieval trading past, and a direct Intercity that runs between the two towards Arnhem. Deventer is a junction in its own right, with services towards Apeldoorn, Almelo and Utrecht, which helps a household whose members work in different directions. Local employers include Wolters Kluwer and Auping, and the town hosts a Saxion campus and the regional hospital.
What works
- Direct Intercity to Zwolle
- Junction with links towards Apeldoorn, Almelo and Utrecht
- Brink square, festivals and a historic riverside centre
Trade-offs
- Low-lying streets by the IJssel can flood at high water
- A smaller regional hub than Zwolle

Deventer's older core sits on a river dune: the restored Bergkwartier, the Brink and the small red-roofed terraces of the Rode Dorp, which are mostly rented. The former harbour quarter Pothoofd now holds modern apartment blocks, while Keizerslanden, Borgele and Platvoet are family districts from the sixties and Colmschate adds newer suburban streets. Zwolle's stock leans towards recent expansion areas such as Stadshagen, so Deventer feels more layered and more historic.
