Almere
Almere is the larger planned city back toward Amsterdam, with a theatre, bold modern architecture and several stations on the same Intercity line that serves Lelystad.
- City feel
- Easy commute
Lelystad and Almere were planned side by side in the polders, and the Intercity from Lelystad Centrum stops at Almere Centrum before heading on to Amsterdam Zuid and Schiphol. For a Lelystad renter who wants the Amsterdam region closer, or simply a livelier base, Almere is the obvious step along the line: it has a theatre, a music venue and landmark buildings such as the Citadel and The Wave. Many residents commute toward Amsterdam and the Gooi, and the city has several railway stations of its own.

Almere shares Lelystad's planned, modern character but on a larger canvas. Early housing was uniform and functional, later districts such as the Regenboogbuurt chose more distinctive and exclusive designs, and Almere Haven is the oldest area, down on the water. Districts like Stad, Buiten, Hout and Poort each have a different setting, from lakeside to woods, so renters can pick a corner that matches their taste. Overall it feels busier and more urban than Lelystad, with more variety between neighbourhoods.
