Purmerend
Purmerend is a polder growth town of newer family districts and open Waterland countryside, joined to Zaandam by a direct Sprinter train.
- Family friendly
- Green and outdoors
Purmerend grew from a market town into a commuter town of the Amsterdam region, and it lies on the line from Zaandam towards Hoorn, so a Sprinter runs directly between the two. Trains to central Amsterdam run via Zaandam or Sloterdijk, while bus lines on a dedicated busway go straight there. What changes is the setting: open polder, the Beemster area since the municipal merger, and a compact town with its own cinema, theatre and concert venue instead of Zaanstad's river and windmill heritage.
What works

Trade-offs

Purmerend expanded fast since the sixties as a designated growth town, so most of it is planned districts rather than old townhouses: older ones such as Overwhere, Wheermolen and Purmer-Noord, newer ones such as De Gors, Purmer-Zuid and Weidevenne. Compared with Zaanstad's mix of timber Zaan houses, factory-era streets and polder suburbs, the stock is more uniform and newer, and tenants tend to be families and households who work around Amsterdam.
