Heerhugowaard
Heerhugowaard trades Alkmaar's canals and cheese market for planned family districts, an artificial lake and open polder, just up the same railway line.
- Family friendly
- Green and outdoors
- Quieter
Heerhugowaard lies just north of Alkmaar on the Den Helder line, with direct Intercity trains and a direct Sprinter, so anyone drawn to Alkmaar's shops, schools and jobs can live here without changing trains. It is a product of fast growth on reclaimed polder rather than a historic port, which gives it a calm, planned, residential character, with its own shopping centres, theatre and cinema and green space such as the Waarderhout woodland.

Most of Heerhugowaard was laid out in planned Vinex-era districts rather than around an old core, so the stock tends towards family-sized homes in tidy, themed neighbourhoods, with the newest area, Stad van de Zon, built around solar energy and an artificial lake. Alkmaar mixes canal-side streets and flats near the centre with suburban rings; here the feel is suburban throughout, usually with a little more room between houses and a household mix that leans towards families.
