Schagen
Schagen swaps the naval port and sea air for West Frisian farmland, a market-town centre and a station on the same Intercity line as Den Helder.
- Quieter
- Green and outdoors
Schagen lies a few stops down the line from Den Helder, just where the single track becomes double, and the Intercity towards Amsterdam calls at both. Living there instead of the naval port means calmer, more agricultural surroundings, the Schager Wiel nature area and a recreation harbour, with the coastal villages of Callantsoog and Petten in the same municipality. What you give up is Den Helder's own harbour quarter and the beaches within town limits.

Schagen's housing is smaller in scale and more rural than Den Helder's post-war flats and terraced streets. Shopping streets and the covered Makado centre form the middle, neighbourhoods such as Hoep and Waldervaart surround it, newer districts like Nes-Noord and Waterveld extend it, and the municipality's villages add quieter streets. Tenants tend to be households tied to the regional farming and service economy rather than to the navy or the offshore sector.
