Enkhuizen is where the railway east of Hoorn ends, and Intercity trains run straight between the two towns before continuing to Amsterdam. The town grew rich on herring and overseas trade, and today it reads as a smaller, calmer sibling of Hoorn, with old city gates, canals, harbour basins, one of the country's largest marinas and a major open-air museum, while its working life mixes tourism, seed breeding and some manufacturing.

Housing clusters in a compact historic core, with inner-town districts such as 't Suud, Boerenhoek and Plan-Zuid and newer ones like Plan-Noord, Oude Gouw, Kadijken and Buiten Veste towards the edge. Streets inside the old centre tend to be narrower and more canal-bound than in much of Hoorn, with older terraced homes in the middle and family neighbourhoods further out. Many residents commute to Amsterdam or other larger towns.
