Zaanstad
Zaanstad sits at the Zaandam end of Purmerend's own railway line and joins the Intercity corridor through Amsterdam, with river towns and windmills in place of polder suburbs.
- Easy commute
- City feel
Anyone settled in Purmerend knows the catch: outside the rush hour there is no direct train to Amsterdam Centraal, so trips go round by Zaandam or Sloterdijk. Moving to Zaanstad removes that detour. A Sprinter runs along the same line between Purmerend and Zaandam, and Zaandam station carries Intercity services through Amsterdam toward Utrecht and beyond. You also stay close to open water and countryside: Zaanstad is strung along the River Zaan, with the Zaanse Schans windmills and rural edges.
What works
- Zaandam station has Intercity trains through Amsterdam
- Same railway line as Purmerend, so a direct Sprinter
- River towns, windmills and open edges close by
Trade-offs
- Older, more mixed housing than newer districts
- Not every Zaan village is close to a station

Where Purmerend grew fast into modern districts such as Weidevenne and Overwhere, Zaanstad is older and more layered: a string of towns and villages along the river, Zaandam as the urban core, and a long industrial past built on mills, shipbuilding and food production. Expect denser streets and heritage character near the water, newer neighbourhoods on former meadows, and village settings such as Assendelft and Westzaan. The housing stock tends to be more mixed in age and style than a single expansion.
