Heerenveen
Heerenveen is on the same Zwolle line as Leeuwarden, with Intercity and Sprinter trains, plus a sporty, leafy town of canals and estates that suits families.
- Easy commute
- Family friendly
- Green and outdoors
Heerenveen is the natural step south of Leeuwarden: Intercity and Sprinter trains both stop there on the line towards Zwolle, and two motorways meet beside the town, so commuting works by rail or by car. The town grew along peat canals and drew a comfortable middle class, and it now sits next to the wooded estates of Oranjewoud, with the Heeresloot and other canals running through it.

Heerenveen developed as a long, narrow strip beside its canals, with building west of the railway starting some decades ago and newer expansion to the east in this century, so newer residential districts sit next to the older core. The feel is more suburban and family oriented than Leeuwarden's dense historic centre, and sports facilities such as the swimming pool and ice rink sit close to the neighbourhoods.
