Hoogeveen
Hoogeveen, a former peat colony in southern Drenthe, lies on the railway between Zwolle and Groningen and links to Emmen by a direct bus, offering a train towards Groningen that Emmen lacks.
- Easy commute
- Quieter
No train runs between Emmen and Hoogeveen; the link is a direct bus calling at many villages on the way, so this is a modest but real alternative, best suited to people who work in Hoogeveen or rely on the train more than on trips into Emmen. Hoogeveen sits on the Meppel–Groningen railway, where Sprinters run direct to Zwolle and Groningen, while Emmen's only railway leads to Zwolle. It is also a central shopping and service point for southern Drenthe, with industrial employers of its own.

Hoogeveen began as a peat colony, and after the war most of its canals were filled in, leaving long, wide, straight roads and large new neighbourhoods built for rapid growth, with De Erflanden as a later addition. Around the old Kruis crossroads some historic houses with decorative facades survive. Emmen's greener, open suburbs with woonerf streets and its high-rise modern centre feel different; Hoogeveen reads as a compact grid town where renters often work in local industry.
