Arnhem
Arnhem is a leafy provincial capital on the Nederrijn at the foot of the Veluwe, joined to Nijmegen by direct Intercity and Sprinter trains and a fast cycle route.
- Green and outdoors
- Easy commute
Intercity and Sprinter trains run straight between Nijmegen and Arnhem, and a fast cycle route follows the same corridor, so jobs and friends in either city stay within reach. Arnhem Centraal also has Intercity routes towards Utrecht, Zwolle and Amsterdam, plus a Regional Express heading for Düsseldorf. The setting is the difference: Arnhem lies at the foothills of the Veluwe, with the Hoge Veluwe National Park reaching into its northern corner.

Arnhem is organised around a centre, a hilly, leafy north and a more residential south. Its past as a genteel resort, nicknamed the Little Hague of the East, still shows in the parks and greenery, and the slopes of the northern districts are unusual for the Netherlands. Next to Nijmegen's student-heavy mix and its newer districts across the Waal, expect an older, calmer residential character, with a student presence from the HAN and the ArtEZ arts institute.
