Haarlem
Haarlem is the nearest old city for anyone in Haarlemmermeer: a medieval centre, museums and the dunes within reach, with Intercity trains to Amsterdam Centraal, Leiden and The Hague.
- City feel
- Easy commute
- By the coast
From Hoofddorp, Haarlem is the closest place with the density and history the polder lacks, and the two municipalities share a border. No train runs between them, but the rapid bus line, largely on its own bus lanes, connects the towns directly. Haarlem station then offers Intercity services to Amsterdam Centraal, Leiden and The Hague, a wider network than Hoofddorp's mostly Sprinter stops, which suits those commuting along the main Randstad rail line.

Hoofddorp and its neighbouring towns are modern, planned places on a drained polder; Haarlem is an old city of canal-side streets, almshouse courtyards and protected quarters, with a protected cityscape covering much of the core. Older, often smaller homes in character buildings are common in the centre and in neighbourhoods such as Garenkokerskwartier and the Leidsebuurt, while Schalkwijk brings large blocks of flats. Moving across brings density, character and street life in place of open surroundings and newer stock.
