Haarlemmermeer
Haarlemmermeer, around Hoofddorp, lies just across the ring canal from Amstelveen and shares its airport economy, with direct trains to Amsterdam Zuid.
- Easy commute
- More space
For someone who knows Amstelveen as a base for Schiphol, the airlines and the Zuidas, Haarlemmermeer is the neighbouring option: it lies across the Ringvaart, Schiphol sits inside its boundaries, and the rapid bus line linking Amstelveen, Schiphol, Hoofddorp and Haarlem runs through both. Hoofddorp station adds direct Sprinter trains to Amsterdam Zuid, Amsterdam Centraal and Schiphol, so those working along the Zuidas can trade the tram for the train.

Amstelveen's stock grew after the war in neighbourhoods such as Westwijk, Elsrijk and Keizer Karelpark, with older village cores at Bovenkerk and Nes aan de Amstel. Haarlemmermeer is younger still: a drained polder where Hoofddorp, Nieuw-Vennep and Badhoevedorp grew as planned towns, with few old buildings and a wide, open landscape. That tends to mean modern housing and more room for lakes and parks, and a feel closer to a self-contained polder town than to a mature suburb of Amsterdam.
