Sittard-Geleen
Sittard-Geleen, the junction town south of Roermond, puts Maastricht, Heerlen and the Chemelot site on one rail network, in two towns with a hospital and large schools.
- Easy commute
- Family friendly
Sittard is reached from Roermond by a direct Intercity or stopping train, and it is where the line to Heerlen leaves the line to Maastricht. Maastricht and Heerlen both become shorter hops than from Roermond, and the Chemelot site with its chemical and research employers sits on the doorstep. Close to home, the Zuyderland hospital and one of the largest secondary school groups in the country serve families.
What works
- Direct trains to Roermond, Maastricht and Heerlen
- Chemelot and head offices as employers
- Hospital and large school groups in town
Trade-offs
- Less water and open landscape than Roermond
- Chemical plants shape parts of the area
- Geleen is short on parks

Sittard-Geleen has a different structure from Roermond's single regional centre. Sittard has a protected old core and postwar neighbourhoods such as Baandert and Vrangendael, while Geleen grew around the Maurits state mine, with miners' housing in Lindenheuvel. Many mining-era social housing blocks in Sittard have been replaced by newer neighbourhoods, so rebuilt and older stock sit side by side. Geleen has few parks, so green space tends to mean the Geleenbeek valley and the wooded hills at the edge, rather than Roermond's lakes.
