Midden-Groningen was formed in 2018 from Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Slochteren and Menterwolde. Hoogezand-Sappemeer provides the largest concentration of shops, schools, culture and rail connections, while dozens of smaller villages spread eastward through a broad rural landscape.
The municipality includes historic ribbon settlements, former peat-colony areas, farmland and recreational water around places such as Schildmeer and Zuidlaardermeer. This variety offers both practical town living and quieter village settings, with Groningen city accessible by train and road from the western part of the municipality.
