With a population of approximately 18,760 residents, this area is characterized by its two main villages: Boven-Hardinxveld and Giessendam - Neder-Hardinxveld. The municipality was formed in 1957 from the merger of the former municipalities of Hardinxveld and Giessendam, and has since seen significant growth, particularly from the 1960s onwards with the construction of new neighborhoods such as De Peulen and Westwijk. The historical roots of Hardinxveld date back to at least 1105, making it one of the oldest villages in the Alblasserwaard region, while Giessendam's name first appeared in 1231, linked to a dam on the Giessen river. This rich history is complemented by a vibrant community that continues to thrive today.
