Eemsdelta was formed in 2021 from Appingedam, Delfzijl and Loppersum. Its 32 towns and villages stretch from medieval church mounds and the historic streets of Appingedam to Delfzijl's harbour and the open clay landscape along the Ems-Dollard coast.
The municipality covers more than 364 square kilometres, so living environments vary greatly: compact urban neighbourhoods, small rural communities and coastal industrial areas all sit within one boundary. Rail links serve several centres, while dikes, waterways and quiet country roads shape travel and recreation across the area.
