Dijk en Waard was formed in 2022 by merging Heerhugowaard and Langedijk. The municipality combines the urban facilities and railway station of Heerhugowaard with characteristic waterside villages such as Broek op Langedijk, Zuid-Scharwoude and Noord-Scharwoude.
Housing, schools, shopping and employment are concentrated around several connected centres, while canals, dikes and the Geestmerambacht recreation area keep the old polder landscape visible. This mix gives residents access to everyday urban services as well as cycling, boating and open green space within the same municipality.
