Heerlen, located in the southeastern province of Limburg, is a city that beautifully marries its historical roots with contemporary developments. Originally established by the Romans as Coriovallum over 2000 years ago, Heerlen is home to the oldest building in the Netherlands, a former bathhouse that speaks to its ancient past. The city experienced significant growth in the early 20th century due to coal mining, which transformed it from a small agricultural village into a bustling urban center. However, the decline of the mining industry brought economic challenges, which the city has worked hard to overcome by attracting various businesses and institutions.

Today, Heerlen is divided into four districts, each with its unique character, and is part of the larger Parkstad Limburg region, which boasts a population of around 240,000. The city is known for its impressive architecture, including the iconic Glaspaleis, a cultural center that was restored in 2004 and recognized as one of the world's most significant 20th-century buildings. Heerlen's blend of historical significance, modern amenities, and vibrant community life makes it an intriguing destination for residents and visitors alike.
