Meppel, located in the southwestern part of Drenthe province, is a delightful blend of historical significance and modern amenities. With a population of over 35,000, Meppel is the smallest municipality in Drenthe by area, covering just 57 km². The town has experienced significant growth in the 21st century, making it a regional hub with a variety of shops, a hospital, and a lively atmosphere. The town's history dates back to 1141, when it was merely a collection of farms. Over the centuries, Meppel evolved into a bustling town, particularly flourishing during the 16th century due to peat extraction and its strategic location as a transit port. The waterways that traverse the town, including the Heerengracht and Prinsengracht, have earned it the nickname "Mokum of the North," drawing comparisons to Amsterdam.

Meppel's rich history is also reflected in its architecture, with the Grote of Mariakerk still standing as a testament to its past. The town was granted city rights in 1644 and again in 1809, showcasing its growth and importance over the years. Unfortunately, during World War II, the Jewish community of Meppel was nearly wiped out, a somber chapter in its history. Today, the town is known for its vibrant community spirit, with a historical society dedicated to preserving its heritage. Recent developments, such as the reopening of parts of the Gasgracht, highlight Meppel's commitment to maintaining its historical charm while embracing modernity.
