The municipality is steeped in history, with its first mention dating back to 1275, and it has evolved through various political changes over the centuries, including its incorporation into the United Provinces in 1713.
The municipality comprises five official cores, including Offenbeek, Ouddorp, and Rijkel, each contributing to the area's unique character. Offenbeek, located on the eastern side of the Venlo-Roermond railway line, features several new developments and is connected by the Keulseweg, which leads to the German border.
