A fireplace (open haard or schouw) is a desirable feature that adds a focal point and a sense of coziness (gezelligheid) to a living room. They can be found in various styles, from rustic brick fireplaces in farmhouses to grand, carved stone or marble mantelpieces in stately canal houses. However, it is crucial for a tenant to determine the fireplace's actual function, which can fall into one of three categories:
Functional Wood-Burning Fireplace: A traditional open hearth where wood can be burned. Before using it, a tenant must confirm with the landlord that the chimney flue has been recently and regularly swept and is certified as safe for use.
Gas Fireplace: A more modern, convenient option that provides real flames and heat at the flick of a switch, without the mess of wood.
Purely Decorative: In many renovated properties, especially apartments, the original fireplace and mantelpiece have been preserved for their aesthetic value, but the chimney has been sealed off. It is no longer functional and serves only as a decorative element.
A Note on Wood Burning
Tenants with a functional wood-burning fireplace should be aware of the growing debate around air pollution. Several municipalities are considering or have implemented restrictions or temporary bans (stookverbod) on wood burning during certain weather conditions to improve local air quality. A functional fireplace may not be usable year-round.
