Every Dutch energy bill is comprised of three main parts: the cost of the energy you used, the fees for using the energy grid, and a substantial portion of government taxes. One of the key components of this tax structure is the vermindering energiebelasting (energy tax discount or reduction). This is a fixed, lump-sum amount (amounting to several hundred euros per year) that is automatically deducted from the annual energy bill of every household with an electricity connection. You do not need to apply for it; it is a standardized, automatic credit.
The Purpose of the Discount
The Dutch government considers a certain level of energy consumption to be a basic necessity of life (basisbehoefte). The government levies a tax (energiebelasting) on every kilowatt-hour of electricity and cubic meter of gas consumed. The vermindering energiebelasting is effectively a tax credit designed to compensate households for a portion of this tax, thereby making a basic level of energy usage more affordable. Because it is a fixed amount, it has a proportionally larger effect on the bills of households with low energy consumption. It is a form of universal, basic energy subsidy that is integrated directly into the tax and billing system.
